Are You Toxic? Does Your Body Need Cleansing?
Toxicity how much a substance is able to damage a person (or other living thing). Toxicity can refer to the effect on the whole
body or a part of your body, like a cell (cytotocxicity) or an organ (organotoxicity), like the liver (hepatotoxicity).
Detoxification is about what you Eat, Drink, Breathe, and how you Sleep, Think, and Move. ...

Are You Toxic? Does Your Body Need Cleansing?
For more information, see:
 | | Is it possible to breathe WRONG and have that worsen my toxicity?
|
Yes, you can breathe wrong. You can breathe the wrong air, or you can breathe too shallow.
How do I prevent wrong breathing from worsening my toxicity?
- Deep, 'Diaphragm Breathing' insures that you get lots of good oxygen into your lungs so that your blood can load up on the
good stuff to distribute it to your tissues. Make specific opportunities to do this, and I assure you that you will notice a difference
in your health if you have not practiced deep breathing before.
- Breathing good air is not always so simple. Nevertheless, at least avoid the biggies:
- Gases from new carpet, new paint, new mattresses, new vinyl flooring, glues, etc.
 | | How do intestinal problems cause toxicity of the mind?
|
This is more well-elaborated on in the Digestive Problems page. The short story goes like this:
- So, you have a neglected intestinal tract. If it were just a passageway tube that would
not be a problem, but it is MUCH more living and dynamic than that!
- This intestinal neglect, or slow-down, leads to altered function and weakening of the
gastrointestinal tract, form the stomach all the way to the rectum. That results in
- altered pH (acid-base balance) which allows bad bacteria and yeast to proliferate,
- irritation and damage to micro-villi (the hair-like extensions all over inside the
intestinal wall) which limits their ability to properly digest (by enzymes) and absorb
the food and nutrients. This is key! These little villi are the work-horses of the
intestines. They are the enzyme factory and storage facility. Without them stuff
just sits around to be digested by the bacteria.
- Oh yes, bacteria. Normally, we have 3 pounds of GOOD bacteria in our
intestines. If the pH is off, the wrong stuff start growing more. This is like weeds
in the garden. It takes proper nurturing to maintain growth of the good stuff. The
weeds will grow in the worst circumstances - -that is the stressed-out
malnourished intestines.
- This excess of bad and paucity of good bacteria results in lots of bad bacteria
poop (potentially toxic chemicals including Casomorphins from Milk/casein and
gliadomorphins from gluten grains/gliadin, among other chemicals.
- With weeds (bad bacteria and yeast) overgrowing and villi damaged, leakiness
often develops.
- So, you've got bad chemicals the we produce right in our own bodies and leaky
holes in our intestines to allow the bad chemicals to leak right into our blood
stream. That is a bad combination. If there is too much leakiness, too many bad
chemicals, or if the liver is not well-nourished and prepared enough to handle the
increased load, all the body organs will be exposed to this onslaught.
- The Casomorphins gliadomorphins are morphine-like opiods !! Do you think
that will make you a little foggy? But it will also make you addicted to the very
thing that is so detrimental to you.
How can keep my intestines from intoxicating?
- Start with Eating correctly: Returning to Quality Food. This will nourish your intestines,
your mind, and your liver to be able to handle the toxic load.
- Next, take some beneficial bacteria (acidophilus and bifidobacteria) that has been
refrigerated. The non-refrigerated kind are not guaranteed to have much active
bacteria.
- Finally, finding out what is living in your intestines is often necessary and is always
helpful.
 | | Do Pesticides cause Brain Damage, like Parkinson's Disease or Alzheimer's Disease?
|
Parkinson's and Alzheimer's are STRONGLY associated with chemical exposure as part of a regular job and living near pesticide use.
- The more pesticides you are exposed to, the more likely you will develop Parkinson's disease. Your risk of developing
Parkinson's disease increases by 75% by being exposed to 2 different pesticides by living within 500 meters of the field where
they were applied over several years. (See the study done in the central valley of California.)
How do I stop pesticides from damaging my brain or other parts of my nervous system?
Clearly, there are three steps to take:
- Avoid overexposure by where you live and what you eat.
- Although I hesitate to say it, if you live close (certainly within 500 meters) to where they spray pesticides, you need to
move. If you can't move, find out when they will spray EVERY time, and do not go outdoors while they spray, or for more
than a minute within a day or two after they spray. I am not sure how much this avoiding going outdoors will help, but it
seems that it would be helpful.
- Limit the foods that are most likely to have had pesticides used on them listed at the Pesticide Use Info site and in our
Returning to Quality Food CD.
- Maximize your intake of foods rich in detoxifying nutrients and supplement as necessary by assessing your need.
- Do a thorough cleanse that insures you are getting all the nutrients that help you detoxify while you learn how to eat that way on
a regular basis.
- Avoid pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Pesticides are neuro-toxins (they affect the central nervous system), and
they don't know the difference between the bugs and you! For fleas, roaches, ants, etc., use diatomaceous earth, boric acid, or
nematodes, which can be obtained from health food stores and pet supply stores with directions for proper application.
 | | Are my household cleaning products harmful?
|
Often, yes. Many household cleaning products add to your toxicity. As always, it matters how susceptible you are.
What do I do about my household cleaning products to make sure they are not harmful?
This is an excellent list of tips for safe cleaning with baking soda and vinegar (Vinegar & Baking Soda).
Here's a good website to give you some thorough information (Environ Working Group).
Baking soda is better than antimicrobial toothpaste at reducing plaque over 4 weeks. (see the research)
Don't hesitate to switch over; even Windex has a vinegar product, but I don't know what else is in their product.
 | | Do toxins in nonstick pans cause the thyroid gland to stop working, and what about PCBs?
|
- Study Finds Thyroid Disease in Women is linked to Non-stick Chemicals (link)...and thyroid hormone is essential for
normal brain development (link).
- It has long been known that PCBs interfere with endocrine gland function, especially the thyroid. (link).
- PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) were banned in 1977, but they don't break down in the environment and are absorbed and
stored easily in the fat of fish, other seafood, and other animals, including humans.
- A 2009 study found that PCB exposure altered the growth of nerve endings, especially in rat offspring with inherited deficits.
How do I stop toxins from damaging my thyroid gland, my other organs, or even my baby?
- Recognize that they are stored in your fat and are released in breast milk. Losing much fat while you are breast-feeding will
increase the exposure to your child.
- Don't be overfat...easy to SAY, isn't it? Truly, you don't want to increase the storage sites for these toxins.
- A large amount of PCBs can be removed from fish if you cook and clean them in certain ways.

 | | Is my job one of the dangerous 12 that cause brain and nervous system damage?
|
Well, let's see... Recent study findings, published in JAMA, determined that those in formaldehyde-exposed jobs had
- 50% greater likelihood of dying of a deadly nervous system disease (ALS) if they worked in the job for less than 4 years.
- 100% greater likelihood of developing a deadly nervous system disease (ALS) if they worked in the job for less than 4 years.
- 200% greater likelihood of developing a deadly nervous system disease (ALS) if they worked in the job for more than 10 years.
What are the jobs? People in these professions had a 30% higher rate of deadly nervous system disease (ALS).
- Beautician
- Pharmacist
- Mortician
- Chemist
- Laboratory technician
- Physician
- Veterinarian
- Dentist
- Firefighter
- Photographer
- Printer
- Nurse
These jobs were more likely to have formaldehyde exposure.
How do I decrease my risk if I am in one of these jobs?
- Check the ingredients on products you use or are around. Then educate those around you, including your boss, coworkers,
and clients, so that everyone is motivated to use formaldehyde-free products. But take care, just because the industry develops
an alternative chemical doesn't mean it is safer; it just means the studies haven't been done yet. Simple, natural products are
more likely to be safe.
- Since other studies have linked pesticide exposure to developing ALS, limit your exposure to pesticides.
- Do the same thing you would do for pesticide exposure.

 | | What is the biggest source of toxins in the air of my house?
|
- Flame retardant chemicals, as revealed in a 2009 summary report and full study.
- The most important contributors to increased blood concentration of flame-retardant chemicals were:
- sleeping pillows (foam MUCH worse than feather or polyester pillows)
- primary vehicle seat cushions (leather much better than cloth covered seats)
A 2009 study found that mothers exposed to flame retardant chemicals in mattresses, etc. contribute to autism in their
children years later...at 5–6 years of age, their neuropsychological functioning: motor performance (coordination, fine
motor skills), cognition (intelligence, visual perception, visuomotor integration, inhibitory control, verbal memory, and
attention), and behavior we negatively affected.
- Volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are a big concern in many houses.
Gases from new carpet, new paint, new mattresses, new vinyl flooring, glues, etc.
How can I get rid of these toxins(VOC's) in my house?
- Indoor houseplants can also be used to accomplish this goal, including philodendrons, spider plants, aloe vera,
English ivy, golden pothos, Boston fern, and bamboo palm.
- You might also consider getting an air filter with HEPA (to clean out particles and Carbon (to clean out gases). (This
is s a good filter that I use.)
- 'Cook' off the gases when you install, carpet, paint, vinyl flooring, mattresses, foam pillows, cloth furniture, etc. Do this
by either leaving them outside (if possible) or turning up the heat for a day or two. If the off-gassing stuff cannot be left
outside, turn up the heat (or open to hot outdoors) and open the windows enough to allow excess heat/gases to
escape. Do not be in the house while you 'cook' it! This is a very toxic time in your home.
 | | Is it possible to turn my genes off and on with toxins?
|
Absolutely. This is the way that PCBs alter the growth of nerve endings in the brain (See 2009 study.)
What do I do to keep toxins from harming me?
Refer to the solution in pesticide exposure section.
 | | Do vaccinations cause Autism?
|
That's hard to say with exclusivity, but many believe that they certainly contribute. They are one of several triggers that seem to
contribute to the development of autism in many individuals.
How do I keep vaccinations from causing autism?
- Build a strong immune system.
- Build a healthy gastrointestinal system.
- Insure that the immune system is not compromised when a vaccination is given.
- Immunize following a modified (less intensive) schedule, if you do immunize.
 | | Is it possible to test for toxicity?
|
This is relatively simple, although it is does with greater clarity by specialty labs.
How do I test for toxicity?
 | | Does the pharmaceutical industry and the government protect me from harm from medicine side-effects?
|
Often, but not always.
Dr. Guy McKhann says, "Don't expect the pharmaceutical industry to monitor itself. Unless a drug causes significant side
effects, there are few limits to what can be claimed and promised."
(Dr Guy McKhann, MD, is professor of neurology and neuroscience at the Zanvyl Krieger Mind/Brain Institute, Johns Hopkins Univ.,
Baltimore. He serves as scientific consultant for the Dana Foundation and scientific advisor for Brain in the News.
How do I protect myself from harmful medications?
Again, listen to Dr. Guy McKhann says, "If you are taking more than four (I made that number up, but it is a place to start), step
back and ask yourself shy. Maybe, just maybe, you can take control of your life non-pharmacologically."
 | | What foods help me detoxify?
|
As I developed a 3-week Cleanse/Detoxification program, I first study the body's needs for specific nutrients to naturally detoxify.
Then I researched which foods had the highest concentration of these nutrients.

 | | What is the best type of Water to Drink?
|
That question is more difficult that it sounds.
- Safe from bacteria. This is a problem in 3rd-world countries or if you drink from canal or river water, but not so much in American
tap water. We accomplish our bug-killing largely with chlorine.
- Safe from heavy metals. There are several systems that do this effectively. Carbon is the key. Pur and Brita are trusted brands.
- Safe from other toxins. Carbon remove many other toxins, but Reverse Osmosis, in combination with carbon is better. Distillation
+ Rervese Osmosis, in combination with carbon removes almost everything in existence.
- Nutritious. The more 'natural' water is likely to be balanced most appropriately for good health, but toxin exposure and bacterial
contamination make 'natural' difficult to do well.
